Transmatic heat presses are a very good quality Italian made range of heat presses, which are favoured by printers who prefer to invest in reliable, high grade equipment.
The digital control panel is nice & simple to use, the heat platen is teflon coated, the press comes with a teflon sheet, and there are a number of interchangeable bottom tables available.
Should I go for clamshell, swing away or a drawer operated heat press?
Usually the choice is between a swing away press or clamshell, however the Transmatic TS-74M and the Transmatic TS-2M 40 x 50 cm Heat Press are drawer operated, which is a very clever alternative which gives the best of both worlds.
Clam presses are often favoured by Tshirt printers who need to get through hundreds of shirts per day, and the simple clam shell operation makes for a faster process.
Swing presses generally give more parallel clearance, which means you can press thicker items (slate, wooden plaques etc), and as the heat platen is swung around the back, it means there is no heat bearing down on you while you’re fiddling about on the bottom table. Swing away heat transfer presses are therefore often the preferred choice for printers producing a wider range of giftware including thicker substrates, rather than garment printers.
With a clamshell press, it simply opens like a clam, meaning that the heat from the top platen is directed at the operators hands, which can make for a less comfortable working environment especially during warmer months if we’re lucky to have them… So swing away presses do away with these issues, but they’re not perfect for everyone mainly due to the requirement of more space. You need to be able to swing the head all the way around to the back of the press, so this means more space is required.
By the way, auto open heat presses are well liked by people using print processes including laser transfer and direct to garment printing, which require an exact dwell time and in particular for hot peel processes, as the auto open feature means you can get in there immediately and do the peel.
The drawer operated presses however, utilise a drawer system to enable you to work on the lower table without worrying about the heat platen, and then to simply slide the lower platen under the heat platen & then press. This means you don’t require the swing space to the side of the press that you would need to have free with a swing head press.
